Our Approach
Childhood is not something to rush through.
At Let’s Play, our approach begins with a simple belief: young children learn best when they feel safe, deeply known and free to experience childhood at an unhurried pace.
Inspired by Steiner/Waldorf early childhood education and guided by the Early Years Learning Framework, our days are shaped by rhythm, imagination, meaningful work, nature, movement, creativity and long periods of uninterrupted play.
We believe children are naturally curious and enormously capable. They do not need every moment directed, entertained or turned into a lesson.
Learning is happening everywhere - it just doesn’t always look like a lesson.
PLAY IS THE WORK OF CHILDHOOD
Children learn through living, doing and imagining.
At Let’s Play, play is not something children do between learning experiences. Play is one of the most important ways young children learn.
Through building, storytelling, painting, baking, gardening, creating, moving and imaginative play, children are constantly developing the foundations they will carry into school and beyond.
A child measuring flour is encountering quantity and sequence. A group building a cubby is problem-solving, negotiating and experimenting with space. A child absorbed in imaginative play is developing language, creativity and social understanding.
Our educators thoughtfully create the environment and then allow children the time and freedom to become deeply involved in what they are doing.
We don’t need to make childhood look more like school for meaningful learning to be taking place.
RHYTHM INSTEAD OF RUSH
There is comfort in knowing what comes next.
Young children thrive when their days have a familiar rhythm.
Rather than moving children rapidly from one scheduled activity to another, our days have a gentle, predictable flow - periods of play, gathering together, meals, stories, rest, creative experiences and plenty of time outdoors.
The rhythm remains familiar without every day needing to be exactly the same.
Over time, children begin to know what comes next without constantly needing to be told. There is less rushing, fewer abrupt transitions and more space to become absorbed in play.
That predictability creates something incredibly important:
a sense of security.
And when children feel secure, they have greater freedom to explore, create, take healthy risks and engage with the world around them.
NATURE IS PART OF THE CLASSROOM
Childhood is allowed to be wonderfully messy here.
We believe children need a relationship with the natural world that comes from being in it, not simply learning about it.
Our children garden, dig, climb, collect, build, care for our guinea pigs, notice insects, experience changing weather and seasons, and spend generous amounts of their day outdoors.
They get muddy. They carry things. They make things. They discover what their bodies can do.
Natural materials and open-ended resources continue indoors, giving children opportunities to transform ordinary objects through their imagination rather than being limited by what a toy has been designed to do.
We want children to experience the kind of childhood where dirt washes off, clothes can be changed and the memories of what they discovered remain.
RELATIONSHIPS COME FIRST
Before children can confidently explore the world, they need to know they are safe within it.
This is one of the reasons Let’s Play has intentionally remained small.
With a small group of children and consistent educators, relationships have the opportunity to deepen over time.
Our educators come to know far more than a child’s name or developmental milestones. They learn their temperament, interests, friendships, rhythms, what makes them laugh, what helps them feel safe, when they need comfort and when they are ready to try something independently.
Children are not expected to simply fit themselves into our day.
We take the time to know the child in front of us.
Because when a child feels genuinely known, secure and connected to the adults caring for them, something beautiful happens:
They begin to venture further from us.
They explore. They experiment. They form friendships. They take risks. They make mistakes and try again.
Strong relationships don’t make children less independent. They give children the security from which independence can grow.
SCHOOL READINESS, WITHOUT RUSHING CHILDHOOD
Ready for school. Without turning preschool into school.
We understand that one of the biggest questions parents have during these years is:
Will my child be ready for school?
Our answer is yes - but our understanding of school readiness extends far beyond whether a child can recognise letters or write their name.
We want children to leave Let’s Play able to communicate their needs, form relationships, participate in a group, approach challenges with confidence, think creatively, solve problems, care for themselves and their belongings, and remain curious about the world around them.
Early literacy and numeracy are naturally woven throughout our days through stories, songs, rhyme, conversation, counting, cooking, pattern, measurement, construction and everyday experiences.
We build the foundations for formal learning without bringing formal schooling down into early childhood.
Because the goal isn't simply to prepare children for their first day of school.
It is to nurture capable, curious and confident children who are ready to keep learning when they get there.
